Do you have brown patches on your cheeks that came back after treatment, or spots that seem to get darker every summer? Are you thinking of getting pico laser in Korea to finally deal with them?
Please read this before you book. Melasma and sun spots can look almost the same in the mirror, but they respond to lasers very differently. Treating melasma like an ordinary spot is one of the most common reasons it comes back darker.
By the end you will know how to tell the main types of pigmentation apart, what a pico laser does, how pico toning, Accento N and Sylfirm X differ, what Peachcell’s winter 2026 pigment packages cost, what recovery is like, and what one trip to Seoul can and cannot do for melasma.
I’m Dr. Ha Chang-ik, head doctor of Peachcell Clinic in Sinsa, Seoul. On October 11, 2026, I gave an invited lecture at the KORA Autumn Congress on “Pigmentation treatment and skin regeneration with pico laser.” Before Seoul I practiced in Jeju, where the sun is strong and I saw more kinds of pigmentation in a month than many clinics see in a season. I also serve as Academic Director of the Korean Society of Filler Medicine (KSFM).
At Peachcell every first visit starts with a 3D skin scan on EVE MUSE, which shows pigment that is hard to judge by eye. Then you talk to me, the doctor who will treat you. We use genuine devices only, including Picolite Black (pico laser) and Accento N (755nm and 1064nm), and since October 2026 all treatment rooms on our second floor are private one-person rooms.
I wrote this because many patients from abroad arrive expecting one strong session to erase melasma. A stronger laser feels like it should work faster. With melasma, too much energy can trigger more pigment or leave pale spots. The plan has to match the type of pigment, and for melasma it needs to be gentle and repeated.
Melasma vs dark spots: why they need different lasers
Before talking about devices, we need to know what kind of pigment you have. These are the types I see most often:
- Sun spots (solar lentigines) and freckles: clear-edged brown spots on sun-exposed skin. The pigment sits in defined clusters. A targeted laser shot can break it up, a thin crust forms, and it flakes off in about a week.
- Melasma: hazy, blotchy patches, often on both cheekbones, the forehead or upper lip. It is driven by UV, visible light, heat, hormones and an irritated skin environment, including small blood vessels and a weakened lower layer of the skin. It tends to return and to worsen in summer.
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation: darkening after acne, a burn, or an irritating treatment.
- Deeper bluish-brown patches (such as Hori nevus), which sit deeper and need a different schedule.
Many faces have more than one type at once. This is why melasma needs a different approach. Hitting a melasma patch with high energy, the way you would treat a sun spot, can inflame the skin and make it darker (rebound pigmentation). Too-frequent toning at high energy can leave small white spots. Melasma responds better to low energy over several sessions, combined with daily sun protection and calming the skin.
I go through the five pigmentation concerns I see most in this short video.
What a pico laser does, and what Picolite Black is
A pico laser fires pulses lasting picoseconds, trillionths of a second. At that speed the pigment is shattered mainly by a pressure effect rather than heat, into particles fine enough for the body to clear. Less heat around the target means less risk of irritating the surrounding skin, which matters for melasma and for darker skin tones.
At Peachcell we use Picolite Black. It can be used in different ways:
- Pico toning: low energy, wide passes over the whole face. Used for melasma background and dull, uneven tone. No crust, little downtime.
- Spot treatment: higher energy aimed at individual sun spots or freckles. Small crusts form and fall off.
- Pico Fraxel: a fractional mode for texture and scars, a different goal from pigment.

More detail on settings and candidates is on the pico laser treatment page.
Pico toning vs Accento N vs Sylfirm X: which does what
These three are often presented as competitors. In my practice they do different jobs, and the melasma plans that work well for my patients often use more than one.
| Device | How it works | Where I use it |
|---|---|---|
| Picolite Black (pico toning) | Picosecond laser, low energy over the whole face | Melasma background, dull and uneven tone, gradual brightening |
| Accento N | Dual-wavelength laser, 755nm and 1064nm | Distinct spots, freckles, sun spots, redness, fine facial hair |
| Sylfirm X | Microneedle radiofrequency | Melasma with redness or sensitive skin, working on the vessels and damaged lower layer that keep it active; also pores and acne scars |
For someone with clear sun spots and little melasma, a spot treatment may be most of the plan. For someone with melasma that keeps returning, especially with redness, I am more likely to start with Sylfirm X and gentle toning, and to leave strong spot treatment for later or skip it. Our signature pigment package combines Accento N, a melasma injection, cryo care, Sylfirm X with exosome LDM, and dual toning across four visits for this reason. You can read more about Accento N on the Accento N treatment page.
Who pico laser suits, and who should wait
Pico laser is a good fit for:
- Sun spots and freckles you want removed
- Melasma, as part of a gentle multi-session plan
- Dull, uneven tone without a single clear cause
- Some post-acne marks, once the acne is controlled
I would wait, or change the plan, if:
- You have a fresh tan or sunburn
- The skin is inflamed, with active eczema, dermatitis or infection
- You are pregnant. Melasma often changes with hormones, and I would rather plan treatment after the pregnancy
- You recently used isotretinoin (acne medication) or have had strong peels. Tell me so I can judge timing
- You expect a single session to clear melasma permanently
Darker skin tones have a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation after any laser. That does not rule pico laser out, but it means lower settings, more spacing and strict sun protection afterward.
What Jeju and the KORA lecture taught me about pigmentation
When I was director at a clinic in Jeju, I saw how strong sun shapes the skin. People came in with sun spots, freckles, melasma and mixed patterns, often side by side on the same cheek. That is where I learned to slow down at diagnosis. If you treat the wrong type with the wrong energy, the skin tells you within weeks. I talk about this in a short video on the skin concern I saw most in Jeju.
At the KORA Autumn Congress on October 11, 2026, I shared with other doctors how I use pico laser for difficult pigment while protecting the skin barrier, and how to set safer parameters. You can see a bit of the day in this behind-the-scenes clip.

Pico laser at Peachcell, step by step
- WhatsApp consultation. Send clear photos in daylight without makeup, from the front and both sides. Tell me how long you have had the pigment, what you have tried, and whether it gets worse in summer.
- Arrival. Consultation on the 3rd floor, treatment in a private room on the 2nd floor.
- EVE MUSE 3D scan. This maps surface and deeper pigment and redness, which helps separate melasma from spots.
- Consultation with me. I decide which type of pigment each area has and which device and energy to use, and I tell you how many sessions I expect.
- Numbing cream if needed. Pico toning is usually tolerated without it. Spot treatment and Sylfirm X are more comfortable with numbing cream.
- Treatment. Toning feels like light snapping on the skin. Spot treatment stings briefly at each spot.
- Aftercare. Soothing care, sunscreen, written instructions, and a WhatsApp follow-up.

Results and recovery: what to expect
Results
Sun spots and freckles often lighten clearly after one or two spot treatments, though some come back with sun exposure over time. Melasma improves more slowly. Patients usually notice the patches look softer and the overall tone more even across a series of sessions, not after the first one. Melasma tends to recur, so most people need maintenance and lifelong sun protection. Results vary, and I will tell you what I think is realistic for your skin. One of the cases the clinic has published is a pigmentation package before and after.
Recovery
- Pico toning: mild redness for a few hours. Most people wear makeup the next day.
- Spot treatment: small dark crusts for about 5 to 10 days. Don’t pick them. The new skin can stay pink for a few weeks.
- Sylfirm X: redness and small marks from the needles for a day or two.
Possible side effects include redness, swelling, temporary darkening (post-inflammatory pigmentation), and, with too much energy or too-frequent toning, pale spots. Blisters are uncommon. For a week, avoid saunas, alcohol, smoking and harsh scrubs, and use sunscreen every day.
Planning pico laser into a Seoul trip, and checking the device
Here is the honest part for travelers. Spot removal can be done in one visit. Melasma usually needs a series, often every one to a few weeks. If you can visit only once, a realistic plan is to treat clear spots, start melasma care, and continue with a dermatologist at home or on your next trip. I will write down what we did so your doctor at home can follow it.
- Do spot treatment at the start of your trip so the crusts can fall off before you fly, or accept that you may fly with small crusts.
- Plan your sun protection. Sightseeing in Seoul means hours outdoors. Wear a hat and reapply sunscreen.
- Peachcell is near Sinsa Station (Line 3 and Shinbundang Line), open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 16:00, closed Sunday.
How to check the device
Ask which laser is being used and for what. A clinic should be able to tell you the device name and why it fits your pigment type. At Peachcell we use genuine devices only, and I explain the plan for each area before we start.

Frequently asked questions
Can pico laser get rid of melasma in one session?
No. Melasma usually needs several gentle sessions plus daily sun protection, and it can come back. One session can start the process and treat clear sun spots, but I would not promise melasma clearance from a single visit.
Is pico toning or Accento N better for dark spots?
For distinct sun spots and freckles, a targeted shot with Accento N or pico spot mode works well. For melasma and overall tone, low-energy pico toning fits better. Many faces have both, so the plan often combines them.
Does pico laser hurt?
Pico toning feels like light snapping and most people tolerate it without numbing cream. Spot treatment stings briefly at each spot. We use numbing cream for spot treatment and Sylfirm X if you prefer.
Can pico laser make pigmentation worse?
It can, if the energy is too high for the pigment type or the skin is inflamed or tanned. That is why diagnosis comes first and why I use gentler settings for melasma and for darker skin tones.
How long until I can wear makeup?
After pico toning, most people can wear makeup the next day. After spot treatment, keep the crusts clean and covered with the care we give you until they fall off, usually in about a week.
Results vary by individual. Every treatment plan is decided after an in-person consultation with the doctor.
