Onda lifting uses microwave energy from a device made by DEKA in Italy. It heats the fat layer and the lower dermis at the same time, so it can tighten skin and reduce some fat in one treatment.
Most people search for Onda lifting when their face looks heavy or round rather than saggy: fullness along the jaw, a double chin, cheeks that hide the jawline. It is also used on the body, such as the abdomen, thighs and upper arms.
Onda is low in pain and usually done without numbing cream, which makes it practical during a short trip to Seoul. Here is how it works, who it fits, and what it costs at Peachcell in Gangnam.
How it works
Onda emits microwaves at 2.45GHz. Fat contains less water than skin, and at this frequency the energy builds up as heat mainly in the fat layer and the deep dermis below the surface.
In the fat layer, heat can damage some fat cells, which the body clears over the following weeks. In the dermis, heat tightens collagen and stimulates new collagen.
A cooling system on the handpiece keeps the skin surface cool throughout, which protects the outer skin and is a big reason the treatment is comfortable without anesthesia.
The dose is measured in kilojoules (kJ), the total energy delivered. Small face areas use less energy and larger body areas more. Tightening can be felt early; fat reduction shows gradually over several weeks. Results vary.
Who it suits
- A round face with fullness along the jaw and lower cheeks
- Double chin and fat under the jaw
- Jowls that come more from fat than from deep sagging
- Loose skin with some fat on the abdomen, thighs or upper arms
- People who want low-pain lifting with no numbing and a quick return to normal
When another option fits better
- A thin face with hollow cheeks: reducing fat can make it look more gaunt. XERF plus Hylo-Wave is the safer direction.
- Deep sagging and marionette lines with little fat: Ultherapy PRIME works on the deeper support layer.
- Crepey eyelids and fine lines: eye Thermage or Thermage FLX focuses on the skin itself.
Dr. Ha’s note
Onda is the device I think of first for a round face, or for jowls that are really fat sitting on the jaw. On those faces it can sharpen the line without the deeper discomfort of Ulthera, and when sagging is also deep I combine the two. Where I am careful is the thin face. If there is little fat to begin with, taking more away can make someone look older, so I check fat thickness and cheek volume before I recommend it. In one of my short videos I list three things to check before Onda: an experienced doctor, real case history, and a proper consultation. I stand by that list for any clinic you choose.
Aftercare
- Warmth and mild swelling are normal for a short time.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for about a week before and after.
- Avoid strong massage, saunas and jjimjilbang for about a week.
- You can wash and wear makeup the same day.
- Use sunscreen every day.
- If you notice a blister, a firm lump or numbness that does not fade, contact the clinic.
- Fat reduction appears gradually; results vary between people.

What does kJ mean for Onda?
kJ (kilojoules) is the total energy delivered. A small face area may need 40–60kJ, a fuller lower face more, and body areas such as the abdomen far more. The doctor sets the amount after checking how much fat and laxity there is.
Does Onda hurt?
It is one of the lower-pain lifting treatments. Most people feel warmth that builds and then fades as the handpiece moves. It is usually done without numbing cream.
How long do Onda results last?
Tightening builds over weeks to a few months. Fat cells that are destroyed do not come back, but remaining cells can grow with weight gain, and skin keeps aging. Results vary.
Can I fly home the day after Onda?
Yes. There is no wound and most people go straight back to normal plans. Mild swelling or tenderness, if any, does not stop you from flying.
Results vary by individual. Every treatment plan is decided after an in-person consultation with the doctor.
