Are you planning lifting in Korea and stuck between Ultherapy and Thermage, not sure which one your face actually needs?
Please read this before you book either one. The two names get used as if they were interchangeable. They work at different depths and fix different problems, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason people tell me their lifting “didn’t do much.”
By the end you will know how each device works, which face shape each one suits, when combining them makes sense, what Peachcell charges per shot in winter 2026, what recovery looks like day by day, and how to check that a clinic in Korea is using genuine tips.
I’m Dr. Ha Chang-ik, head doctor of Peachcell Clinic in Sinsa, Seoul. I graduated from Korea University College of Medicine, I serve as Academic Director of the Korean Society of Filler Medicine (KSFM), and I give invited lectures to other doctors. We have both Ultherapy PRIME (Merz) and Thermage FLX in the clinic, and I have had both on my own face before offering them to patients.
Every first visit at Peachcell starts with a 3D skin scan on EVE MUSE. After that you talk to me, the doctor who will actually treat you, not a counselor. We use genuine devices and genuine tips only, and since October 2026 every treatment room on our second floor is a private one-person room.
I wrote this because of one assumption I hear from foreign patients almost every week: that the stronger lifting is always the better one, so the answer must be Ulthera, or both at the maximum number of shots. For some faces that is right. For others, a strong deep lift on thin skin with little volume leaves the face looking more tired than before. The right choice depends on where your sagging comes from.
Ultherapy PRIME vs Thermage FLX: what each device does
Ultherapy PRIME is a microfocused ultrasound device made by Merz. Before each line of energy, I see a live ultrasound image of your skin layers on the screen, so I can place the heat at a chosen depth. The energy lands as tiny heated points in the SMAS (the fibrous layer a surgeon tightens in a facelift) and in the deep dermis. Over the following months those points contract and rebuild collagen. In plain terms, Ulthera works on the structure that holds your jawline and cheeks up.
Thermage FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency. It spreads heat more evenly through the dermis across a wider area, while the tip cools the surface. It doesn’t reach as deep as Ulthera, but it covers the whole face and is good at tightening loose, crepey skin, softening fine lines and making the skin feel denser. A smaller eye tip can treat the eyelids and the area around the eyes. Thermage works on the quality of the skin itself.
| Ultherapy PRIME | Thermage FLX | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Microfocused ultrasound with live imaging | Monopolar radiofrequency with surface cooling |
| Main target | SMAS and deep dermis, point by point | Dermis, spread across the face |
| Suits | Jowls, loss of jawline, sagging lower face | Loose or crepey skin, fine lines, eyelid laxity |
| How it feels | Deep, sharp heat, strongest over bone | Pulses of heat with cooling and vibration |
| Typical downtime | Redness, swelling, tenderness for days | Redness for hours, mild swelling |
| When results show | Gradually, over about 2 to 3 months | Gradually, over about 2 to 3 months |

Which one suits your face, and when to choose something else
When I examine a face for lifting, I’m asking one question: is the sagging coming from the deep support layer, from the skin, or from fat and volume? The answer decides the device.
- Deep sagging, heavy jowls, marionette lines, a jawline that has blurred: Ulthera is usually the main treatment. I focus the shots along the jaw, the lower cheeks and under the chin.
- Thin, loosening skin, fine lines, crepey texture, hooding around the eyes: Thermage fits better. Eye Thermage is an option for the eyelids.
- Both problems at once, which is common from the 40s onward: a combination of the two, with each device doing its own job.
When neither is the right first choice
- A round face with soft fullness along the jaw or a double chin: the weight is fat, not loose structure. Onda, which reduces fat with microwave energy, often makes more sense, sometimes together with a moderate amount of Ulthera.
- A “peanut-shaped” face (prominent cheekbones with hollows under them, a narrow lower face, thin skin): a strong deep lift can make the hollows look deeper. Here I usually suggest XERF (Serf), a gentler RF lifting, with Hylo-Wave to support volume. I explain this face-shape guide in a short video on which lifting fits which face.
- Your 20s with no real sagging: you probably don’t need either yet. Skin boosters and good sun protection do more for you now.
Please also tell me about pregnancy, a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, metal implants in the face, recent filler or thread lifts, active skin infection, or a tendency to keloid scars. Some of these change the plan or mean we should wait.
Can you combine Ulthera and Thermage in one visit?
Yes, and for the right face it is a sensible pairing. Ulthera handles the deep layer where the jowl and jawline problem sits. Thermage then works on the skin over the whole face so the surface tightens along with the structure underneath. Doing both on the same day is common in Korea and saves a second trip, which matters when you are flying in.
A combination is not automatically better. It costs more, and the face is more tender for a few days. If your skin is still firm and your problem is only the jawline, Ulthera alone may be enough. If your jawline is fine and your concern is crepey skin around the eyes and cheeks, Thermage alone may be enough. I decide the split of shots between the two after examining you, and I will tell you if I think one is unnecessary.
For rounder faces, I sometimes pair Ulthera with Onda instead, to lift and reduce fat in the same session. You can read more on the Ultherapy PRIME treatment page and the Thermage FLX treatment page.
What happens at Peachcell, step by step
- WhatsApp consultation before your trip. Send a front and side photo of your face without makeup and tell me what bothers you. I reply with my honest view and an estimated price range so you can plan.
- Arrival. Consultation is on the 3rd floor of YK Tower, treatment on the 2nd floor in private one-person rooms.
- EVE MUSE 3D skin scan. This maps skin texture, pigment and other markers so we have an objective starting point.
- Consultation with me. I examine your face while you sit up, check where the sagging comes from, and mark the treatment areas. We agree on the device and the number of shots before anything is charged.
- Numbing cream. It stays on for a while before treatment. Most people tolerate both treatments with numbing cream, though Ulthera is clearly more uncomfortable over the jawbone and cheekbones. I rated the pain of each treatment after trying them myself in this short video.
- Treatment. I perform it myself. Ulthera feels like deep, sharp heat in short bursts. Thermage feels like a pulse of heat followed by cooling. Time depends on the shot count.
- Aftercare. Soothing care, sunscreen, written aftercare instructions, and a follow-up message on WhatsApp after you leave.
Ulthera and Thermage cost in Korea: Peachcell’s winter 2026 prices
Both devices are priced by shots. One Ulthera shot is one line of focused ultrasound dots placed in the skin. One Thermage shot is one pulse of radiofrequency from the tip. More shots means more coverage or more passes, not a stronger single hit. A Thermage tip comes with a set number of shots (for example 600 for the face), and the device counts them as they are used.

How many shots you need depends on your face size, how much sagging there is and which areas we treat. A price that looks low can simply mean fewer shots, so always compare the shot count, not only the total.
Results: what patients typically notice, and when
Right after Ulthera, some people see a little tightening along the jaw, but much of what you see on day one is swelling. The real change comes as collagen rebuilds, gradually over roughly two to three months. Patients usually describe it as the jawline looking cleaner in photos and the lower face feeling less heavy. With Thermage, people more often mention that the skin feels firmer and smoother, and that makeup sits better.
I want to be honest about the limits. Neither device gives the result of a surgical facelift. Deep sagging with a lot of loose skin may improve only partly. How long the effect lasts varies with age, skin, weight changes and sun exposure, and many people choose to repeat lifting about once a year. Results differ from person to person, and I will tell you at the consultation what I think is realistic for your face.
One of the before-and-after cases the clinic has published is Ulthera + DCA injection, where fat-dissolving injections were added to the lifting for a lower face with extra fullness. It shows what I mean by matching the plan to the cause.
Recovery timeline after Ulthera and Thermage
- Same day: redness and warmth, mild swelling. You can wash your face and wear makeup the same day.
- Days 1 to 3: after Ulthera, the jaw and cheeks may feel tender or bruised when you chew or touch them. Thermage redness usually fades within hours.
- Weeks 1 to 2: tenderness settles. Some people see small bruises or faint lines after Ulthera, which fade.
- Months 1 to 3: the gradual tightening phase.
Possible side effects include redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness. Less commonly, Ulthera can cause temporary numbness or nerve irritation, and Thermage can rarely cause blisters or small burns. These are uncommon, and I want you to know about them before you decide. For one week, avoid alcohol, smoking, saunas and strong facial massage, and use sunscreen every day.
Planning your Seoul trip around Ulthera or Thermage
Peachcell is at 3F YK Tower, 121 Dosan-daero, Gangnam-gu, close to Sinsa Station (Line 3 and the Shinbundang Line). We are open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 20:00 with lunch from 13:30 to 14:30, and Saturday 10:00 to 16:00 without a lunch break. We are closed on Sunday. Parking in the building is free, with a ₩4,000 valet fee.
- Book the treatment early in your trip, not on your last day, so you have time to rest and can message me if anything concerns you.
- Most people feel fine to fly a day or two after these treatments. Swelling can feel a little more noticeable on a long flight, so drink water and skip alcohol on board.
- Plan photos and big events for later. The day-one face is the swollen face, not the result.
- Send your photos on WhatsApp before you book flights. If I think you need something different, it is better to know before you travel.
How to check for genuine Ulthera and Thermage tips in Korea
Korea has many clinics, and prices for “Ulthera” and “Thermage” vary a lot. Before you pay, it is fair to ask:
- Is it the brand-name device? Ultherapy PRIME is made by Merz and Thermage FLX by Solta. Other HIFU and RF devices exist and can be good, but they are different treatments and should be named as such.
- Can I see the tip? A Thermage FLX tip is single-use. Ask to see it opened for you. Ultherapy transducers are attached at the start of treatment.
- Can I see the shot count? Both devices display shots on the screen. Ask how many shots are planned and check the number at the end.
- Who performs it? Ask whether the doctor you consulted will treat you.
At Peachcell we use genuine devices and genuine tips only, and I am happy to show you the screen. You can read about my background on Dr. Ha Chang-ik’s profile page.

Frequently asked questions
Which is more painful, Ulthera or Thermage?
For most people Ulthera is more uncomfortable, especially over the jawbone and cheekbones, because it delivers focused heat to a deeper layer. Thermage feels like short pulses of heat with cooling. We use numbing cream for both, and I adjust the settings as we go.
Should I get Ulthera or Thermage first if I can only afford one?
Choose by the main problem. If the jawline and jowls bother you most, Ulthera usually comes first. If the skin itself is loose and crepey, or the eye area is the concern, Thermage fits better. Send me photos on WhatsApp and I will give you my view.
Can I fly home the day after treatment?
Most people can fly a day or two later. You may still have some swelling or tenderness. I suggest scheduling the treatment early in your trip so you have a few days in Seoul afterward.
Will Ulthera make my face look hollow?
It can make hollows look more obvious on a thin face with little volume, especially if too many shots go into the upper cheeks. That is why I check face shape first. For a peanut-shaped face I often suggest XERF with Hylo-Wave instead of strong Ulthera.
How long do the results last?
It varies with age, skin condition, weight changes and sun exposure. Many people repeat lifting about once a year to maintain it. Neither treatment stops aging, and results differ between people.
Results vary by individual. Every treatment plan is decided after an in-person consultation with the doctor.
